I work for Barnardos and in private practice.
Many of the young people I work with through Barnardos are aged between 6 and 15. It is also important to recognise that many young people are not diagnosed with Autism and often schools do not understand the dilemma that this causes for the parent/s and young person.
With the work I do it is important to build a trusting relationship and show empathy and awareness.
In private practice I also work with adults that were previously undiagnosed but now have a diagnosis which has made a great difference to their lives as they can now understand so much about their past and certain behaviours and social interaction.
I also have two sons that are diagnosed with ASD.
It can be difficult being in a relationship for the person diagnosed with Autism and much of my work is to increase awareness and introduce strategies.
